Ellen Mattleman Kaplan to Become Seventy’s Interim President and CEO

PHILADELPHIA – June 26, 2014 – Ellen Mattleman Kaplan has been named Interim President and Chief Executive Officer of the Committee of Seventy, the Philadelphia-based independent watchdog organization.

Kaplan will replace Zack Stalberg, who recently announced his retirement. He and his wife, Deb Lock Stalberg, are moving to New Mexico later next month.

A search for Seventy’s permanent leader will be led by Dr. Stephen S. Tang, President and CEO of the University City Science Center, at the request of Board Chairman Mike Carbone. Other members of the Search Committee include Board members Bret Perkins, Judee von Seldeneck, Michael Schwartz, Cristina Cavalieri, Steve Madva and Dianne Semingson.

Applications for the CEO’s position should be e-mailed to Carbone, the Regional President of TD Bank, at michael.carbone@TD.com, with an electronic copy also going to marge.haldis@TD.com. Carbone said the target date for picking a new leader for the organization is September 15. “Seventy must play a vital and visible role during the imminent contests for mayor and City Council.”

Kaplan has been Vice President for Policy for the Committee of Seventy since 2005. She was Director of Policy and Communications for Greater Philadelphia First, an organization which later morphed into the CEO Council for Growth. She also served as an Assistant District Attorney.

“Ellen and I have worked side-by-side almost since the day I began building a new Committee of Seventy,” said Stalberg. “She is perfectly suited to this task.”

The Committee of Seventy is a non-partisan government watchdog that fights for clean and effective government, fair elections and an informed citizenry. For more information, see www.seventy.org.
