Can We Talk?

March 23, 2019 10 am - 12:30 pm, 1 - 4 pm
National Liberty Museum
321 Chestnut, Philadelphia, PA

It’s no secret that America is divided, having a hard time talking civilly or usefully across its divides.

Things don’t have to fall apart this way.

For 20-plus years, the leaders of the PA Project for Civic Engagement have helped people hold productive conversations about challenging issues.

We know that Americans of diverse views can talk about things that matter in a way that leads to insight, not insults, to learning, not lashing out.

AS PPCE’s first project as a unit of Seventy, we’d like to show this can be done in the birthplace of our democracy, just blocks from Independence Hall.

Can We Talk? is a two-part event.

The (free) morning dialogue about the current state of our nation will use a discussion model we’ve tested over the last two years with college students and faith communities.

In the afternoon workshop ($50 fee), we’ll offer a quick grounding in the theories of civil dialogue that undergird our model, then go deeper into how to ask questions, listen and respond in ways that foster productive conversation.

You can put what you’ll learn to use in your workplace, your community, your online interactions and your family.

(Key point: You can get plenty out of the afternoon workshop even if you can’t make it for the morning session.  And vice versa.  Attend either or both.)

Please join us to strike a blow for the notion that America isn’t doomed to division. Some hard work needs doing, but we can do it. Beginning here, in Philadelphia.

(If a scholarship would help you to attend, let us know by emailing lbreitstein@seventy.org.)

Connecting Current and Future Leaders

February 20, 2019 6 - 8 pm
Temple University Center City
1515 Market St, Philadelphia, PA

Join NExT Philadelphia - Urban League of Philadelphia Young Professionals and Temple University Masters of Public Policy program as we provide a forum for millennials to engage with a current leader in the Philadelphia region. This will be a great opportunity to network while adding your voice towards strengthening the experience of urban young professionals in the city.

US Congressman Dwight Evans will be the featured speaker. Congressman Dwight Evans represents Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is currently serving his first term after being elected in a special election in November 2016 and currently serves on the powerful Ways and Means Committee. For 36 years, Congressman Evans served as a state representative in the PA House of Representatives where he was known as a pragmatic leader who knows how to put public policy above politics and make ideas matter. He made history in 1990 when he became the first African-American Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, a position he held for two decades.

NExT Philadelphia is one of over 60 chapters of the National Urban League Young Professionals. As a young friends (age 21 to 40) affinity group of the Urban League of Philadelphia, a direct service civil rights organization, they are volunteers committed to connecting millennials to philanthropic, civic engagement, and professional development opportunities in the Philadelphia region.
